The season in UEFA Champions League 2009/10 will go down as one of the most thrilling, dramatic, and extravagant campaigns ever staged on the European continent. The tournament had everything from some stunning upsets to a few scintillating individual displays.
Group Stage: Madness Right of the Gate
The UEFA Champions League 2009/10 group stage began with Europe’s finest taking the first steps on their #UCL journeys. Defending champions FC Barcelona were drawn in Group F with Inter Milan, Rubin Kazan, and Dynamo Kyiv. Barcelona was considered the big favorite, but initial surprises followed.
Rubin Kazan Visited Camp Nou for the biggest surprise in all Group stage matches and finished 2-1 over Securing Victory against Barcelona. The victory proved that no one was safe, even at the home of world champions.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, staked its claim as a serious contender with wins in the group stages. The big boys did not all have it their way, however. Five-time winners Liverpool failed to make it through the group stages despite dropping down into Group E where Lyon and Fiorentina finished ahead of them, eliminating Rafa Benitez’s men early in proceedings.
Knockouts: Giants Battles
However, the real pressure kicked in from the Round of 16 with Europe’s elite battling it out. Well, that might be up for debate, but what’s not is these three matches which overshadowed the main events:
Inter Milan vs. Chelsea
If Solskjaer was a bystander at the Allianz Arena, then in Mourinho Juventus witnessed what must have been an astonishing tactical masterclass. A dull 3-1 aggregate victory for Inter Milan over Chelsea ensued as Bayern saw off United. Wesley Sneijder was great in the match and also saw how Lucian has a defense team with Javier Zanetti. Far and away the biggest narrative of all however was Mourinho’s second coming at Stamford Bridge, sealed with victory over his old club.
Manchester United v AC Milan
Manchester United made short work of AC Milan, advancing with a 7-2 aggregate. The return match in Old Trafford featured two Wayne Rooney goals that extended his prolific form, while the former United player David Beckham was received with applause by Manchester on returning to a club where he spent some of our-traitorous-perhaps-eternal-lovers-plot-rizo-seasons.
Barcelona vs. Arsenal
Barcelona’s showdown with Arsenal in the quarterfinals was one of those memorable ties. The second leg at Camp Nou was also Messi-inspired as the Argentine scored all four goals in a 4-1 victory after they had drawn the first game 2-2 at Emirates. With such a goal, Messi confirmed his place among the best players in history.
Semi-Finals: Clash of Styles
Two very different semis: Barcelona vs. Inter Milan and Bayern Munich vs Lyon
Barcelona vs. Inter Milan
Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona vs José Mourinho’s Inter Milan: A Tactical Battle Inter took the first leg 3-1 at San Siro with goals from Diego Milito, Maicon, and Wesley Sneijder. In a return game in Barcelona, the Catalans managed only 1-0, and Inter on aggregate let it to the final. Barcelona’s tiki-taka was suffocated by Mourinho, and Inter showed off all of its fortitude during the tie — particularly in eschewing a red card for most of the second leg.
Bayern Munich vs. Lyon
Bayern Munich destroyed Lyon in their semi-final, winning 4-0 on aggregate. Ivica Olić was the hero though, his hat-trick in the second leg of that semi-final enough to put Bayern into… Under manager Louis van Gaal’s tutelage, it had been a quietly efficient team all tournament and now they were presented with the chance of European glory.
The Final — Inter Milan v Bayern Munich
The final was played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on 22 May 2010. These were polar opposite teams from the two coaches. Mourinho made the Nerazzurri very difficult to break down and hit powerhouse German club Bayern Munich in the semifinals, who played a very open brand of football.
Inter Milan had created a perfect game plan from the start. That Diego Milito, arguably the player of the tournament tottered in with 2 goals at either side only seemed to underline how hitch-free his team had carried all comers. His initial strike was a wonderful turn and finish from Wesley Sneijder’s sublime pass before his second goal showed the world he could be deadly in front of goals by finishing sensationally well.
Inter Milan completed a historic treble with this result, having already secured the Serie A title and Coppa Italia. Indeed, it was the crowning glory of Mourinho’s managerial career and confirmed his place among the greatest strategists in football.
